The part of the setup most people never see, yet everything depends on it. The part nobody photographs
The mount is the least interesting-looking item in any imaging setup and the one that decides whether the session is usable. Optics and sensors set what is theoretically possible. Tracking sets what you actually get.
Harmonic drive mounts changed the calculation for portable imaging. A traditional equatorial mount needs a counterweight roughly matching the payload, which means carrying that mass as well as the telescope. A harmonic drive holds position through gear reduction rather than balance, so for typical small-scope payloads the counterweight can go entirely.
What that means in practice
Setup is faster because there is less to assemble and less to balance. The whole rig can go out and come back in one trip. For anyone imaging from a balcony, a driveway or a location that needs a walk, that difference decides how many nights you actually shoot.
The integrated laser is a genuinely useful touch rather than a gimmick. It makes rough polar alignment quick when you cannot see Polaris, which on a city balcony with a restricted horizon is most of the time.
Honest limitations
Harmonic drives have a reputation for higher periodic error than a good belt-driven mount, which is why guiding matters more, not less. If you image unguided, that is worth understanding before buying.
Payload ratings on any mount assume short focal lengths and forgiving conditions. Loading one to its stated maximum and then imaging at 600mm is a different proposition from loading it to half that.
Who it suits
Anyone whose main obstacle is the effort of setting up. A mount that gets used on a marginal Tuesday night will produce more than a better mount that stays in its case. If you have a permanent pier and never move anything, the portability argument disappears and you are paying for a benefit you will not use.
