The part that arrived without being chosen

This came bundled with the Seestar S30 rather than bought deliberately, which is how most people end up with their first decent tripod. It is worth a page of its own anyway, because a tripod is the last thing people think about and often the first thing that limits them. One that flexes turns every gust into trailed stars, and no amount of guiding rescues a support that is moving.

The TC20 and TH10 work as a pair: the tripod provides a stable base, the fluid head provides smooth, damped movement on top of it.

What a fluid head is for

Smooth continuous motion. That suits visual sweeping, terrestrial and wildlife use, framing a landscape with a smart telescope on top, and any video work. It is not built to track the sky at sidereal rate, so tracked long-exposure deep-sky imaging still belongs on the harmonic mount.

In practice this carries the Seestar, a camera for wide-field and star-trail work, and a telescope for visual use.

Judging a tripod

Two things decide whether one is genuinely stable: how quickly vibration damps out after you touch it, and whether the leg locks hold under load without creeping. Both are easy to test at home with the payload mounted, and both tell you more than a load rating does.
